FLUOROPOLYMERS
Fluoropolymers is a generic term used to describe various polymers containing fluorine atoms, which are classified as “specialty” polymers due to their excellent properties.
Fluoropolymers can be divided into the following macro categories:
- 1) Fluorinated polymers:
polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)
perfluoroalkyl (PFA) - 2) Partially fluorinated polymers:
ethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene copolymer (ECTFE);
ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer (ETFE);
poly(chlorofluoroethylene) (PCTFE);
polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF);
tetrafluoroethylene-hexafluoropropylene copolymer (FEP);
Due to their high fluoride content, these plastics have good chemical resistance to almost all acids, alkalis and solvents. They also have excellent non-stick and friction-reducing properties and are therefore a popular choice for coatings.
